چکیده

Neurons receive a large number of excitatory and inhibitory synaptic inputs whose temporal interplay determines the spiking behavior. On average, excitation and inhibition balance each other, such that spikes are elicited by fluctuations [1]. In addition, it has been shown in vivo that excitation and inhibition are correlated, with inhibition lagging excitation only by few milliseconds (∼6 ms), creating a small temporal integration window [2, 3, 4]. This correlation structure could be induced by feed-forward inhibition (FFI), which has been shown to be present at many sites in the central nervous system. To characterize the functional properties of feed-forward inhibition, we constructed a simple circuit using spiking neurons with conductance based synapses and applied spike pulse packets with defined strength and width [5]. We found that the small temporal integration window, induced by the FFI, changes the integrative properties of the neuron. Only transient stimuli could produce a response when the FFI was active, whereas without FFI the neuron responded to both steady and transient stimuli. In addition, the FFI increased the trial-by-trial precision.

Time-dependent activation of feed-forward inhibition in a looming-sensitive neuron.

The lobula giant movement detector (LGMD) is an identified neuron in the locust visual system that responds preferentially to objects approaching on a collision course with the animal. For such looming stimuli, the LGMD firing rate gradually increases, peaks, and decays toward the end of approach. The LGMD receives both excitatory and feed-forward inhibitory inputs on distinct branches of its d...

Inhibition, Spike Threshold, and Stimulus Selectivity in Primary Visual Cortex

Ever since Hubel and Wiesel described orientation selectivity in the visual cortex, the question of how precise selectivity emerges has been marked by considerable debate. There are essentially two views of how selectivity arises. Feed-forward models rely entirely on the organization of thalamocortical inputs. Feedback models rely on lateral inhibition to refine selectivity relative to a weak b...

Global Solar Radiation Prediction for Makurdi, Nigeria Using Feed Forward Backward Propagation Neural Network

The optimum design of solar energy systems strongly depends on the accuracy of  solar radiation data. However, the availability of accurate solar radiation data is undermined by the high cost of measuring equipment or non-functional ones. This study developed a feed-forward backpropagation artificial neural network model for prediction of global solar radiation in Makurdi, Nigeria (7.7322  N lo...

Neural mechanisms of orientation selectivity in the visual cortex.

The origin of orientation selectivity in the responses of simple cells in cat visual cortex serves as a model problem for understanding cortical circuitry and computation. The feed-forward model posits that this selectivity arises simply from the arrangement of thalamic inputs to a simple cell. Much evidence, including a number of recent intracellular studies, supports a primary role of the tha...

GABAB receptor-mediated feed-forward circuit dysfunction in the mouse model of fragile X syndrome.

KEY POINTS Cortico-hippocampal feed-forward circuits formed by the temporoammonic (TA) pathway exhibit a marked increase in excitation/inhibition ratio and abnormal spike modulation functions in Fmr1 knock-out (KO) mice. Inhibitory, but not excitatory, synapse dysfunction underlies cortico-hippocampal feed-forward circuit abnormalities in Fmr1 KO mice. GABA release is reduced in TA-associated i...
